Connecting Guru MCP Server as a Microsoft 365 Copilot Connector

Guru's MCP server can connect to Microsoft 365 Copilot as a Copilot connector, bringing your team's Knowledge Agents into Copilot Cowork. Once connected, people can ask Copilot questions and get answers grounded in your Guru knowledge base, without leaving Microsoft 365.

Access Required
Guru Access: No special Guru role is required to use the connector once your admin has installed it. Setting up Knowledge Agents and MCP access still follows your existing Guru Admin permissions.
Microsoft Access: You need a Microsoft 365 Copilot license and access to Copilot Cowork to use this connector. Your Microsoft admin installs the connector for your organization before individual users can enable it.

Understanding Guru's MCP server as a Copilot connector

Microsoft calls this kind of integration a Copilot connector. Copilot connectors are Microsoft's term for connections that bring outside content and tools into Copilot, and Model Context Protocol (MCP) is one of the standards that connector can use.

Microsoft also distinguishes between two types of Copilot connectors:

Synced connectors index content into Microsoft 365 so it's searchable in Copilot.
Federated connectors fetch data in real time, without indexing or storing a copy in Microsoft 365.

Guru's MCP server works as a federated connector. Your Guru content and external sources stay managed in and through Guru while Copilot calls out to Guru's MCP server in real time whenever a question needs it.

This is a different integration from the Guru app for Microsoft Teams. The Teams app brings Guru Cards into Teams conversations. This connector brings Guru's Knowledge Agents into Microsoft 365 Copilot. You can use either or both, depending on where your team wants to access Guru.

Installing the connector as an admin

A Microsoft 365 admin installs the Guru connector for your organization before anyone else can use it.

Go to the Copilot Cowork App Store in your Microsoft 365 admin center.
Find and select the Guru connector.
Follow the prompts to add it for your organization. More info is available in the MS Copilot Help Center.

Once installed, the connector appears in the Cowork marketplace, where it's available for people in your organization to add.

Enabling and authenticating the connector as an end user

Once your admin has installed the connector, each person who wants to use it enables and authenticates it individually.

In Microsoft 365 Copilot, go to Cowork.
Select Customize.
Under Plugins, find Guru and enable it.
Select Connect and sign in with your Guru account.

This connection step is different from the Guru app for Microsoft Teams. Instead of authenticating automatically, you'll need to select Connect and sign in the first time you enable the connector.

Frequently asked questions about the Guru MCP server as a Copilot connector

Is this the same as the Guru app for Microsoft Teams?
No. The Guru app for Microsoft Teams is a separate integration for using Guru Cards inside Teams conversations. This connector brings Guru's Knowledge Agents into Microsoft 365 Copilot Cowork.

Do I need a Microsoft 365 Copilot license to use this?
Yes. You need a Copilot license and access to Cowork to enable and use the Guru connector.

Do I need any special Guru access to use this?
Only Guru Admins can connect the Guru MCP Server as a Copilot Connector. Then any Guru user that has at least Viewer access to one Guru Knowledge Agent and has access to Copilot and Cowork in Microsoft 365 can enable the connector for their own usage.

Does this integration index or store my Guru content in Microsoft 365?
No. This is a federated connector, so it fetches answers from Guru in real time. Your content stays in Guru.
