Setting up Jira and Jira Service Management as a source
Connecting Jira makes it easy to leverage your team's project management content for AI-powered answers in Guru. Learn how to connect your Jira account, manage permissions, and turn existing project content into trusted, searchable resources.
Action Required for Legacy Jira Source UsersTeams using Guru's legacy Jira and Jira Service Management sources will need to upgrade to the new version by March 31st. This does not impact all Jira source users, this is a small cohort of teams that have been contacted. If you have any questions or wonder if this impacts you, reach out to Guru Support here.
Access RequiredGuru Access: You need to be an Admin, Source Creator, or relevant custom role to set up Sources
Before connecting Jira or JSM, all users must set their email visibility to "Anyone".
The authenticating user must have the following Jira global permissions:
- Administer Jira – Global permission to manage Jira
- Browse Projects – Permission to view projects
- Browse Users and Groups – Permission to view users and groups
These requirements apply to both Jira and JSM connections.
Connecting Jira Issues as a Source
NoteThe Jira "Legacy" Source is an older version of the Jira source that is not as customizable.
- Navigate to Manage > Sources.
- Select Jira Issues from the icon menu.
- Select Configure Integration.
- Name the source.
- Connect your Jira workspace via OAuth. Once connected, all Guru users who have email visibility set to Anyone will inherit whatever access they have in Jira. Click Next.
- You'll be prompted to select which projects and issues you want to sync into Guru, you can filter by date or by selected projects. You'll also have the option to sync in all projects and issues.
- Once that is completed, select Finish to complete the sync.
- Click Connect Source. to confirm your submission.
Connecting Jira Service Management
NoteThe Jira Service Management "Legacy" Source is an older version of the Jira source that is not as customizable.
- Navigate to Manage > Sources.
- Select Jira Service Management from the icon menu.
- Name the source.
- Review the prerequisites and make sure you have the required permissions.
- For accounts with multiple Jira sites, you must enter the site name (e.g., for https://acme.atlassian.net, enter "acme"). If not specified, the first site is auto-selected.
- Connect via OAuth. Click Next.
- Your entry will be validated. After it's validated, click Next.
- Choose whether to sync all projects and issues or only selected projects. Make your selection, then click Finish.
- You can also apply a date filter to view only issues created or updated after a specific date.
- Click Connect Source. to confirm your submission.
Objects Synced from Jira and Jira Service Management
The table below lists the objects we sync from Jira and Jira Service Management.
NoteIf the authorized user has access to both Jira and Jira Service Management under the same account, connecting to one will automatically connect both since they share the same APIs. To avoid this, we recommend creating a dedicated service account with access restricted to only the Jira projects you want to sync.
Project | Issue | Comment |
|---|---|---|
url name description id projectTypeKey totalIssueCount | url name description issueType projectName projectId created updated priority status creator reporter issueId | url content created updated author issueId |
Permissions
Jira and JSM sources inherit permissions. The authenticating user defines the scope of content to sync based on their access, and existing permissions are respected. Guru recommends using a service user to ensure all desired content is synced.
