Identifying Trending Topics in Slack
Guru’s Trending Topics for Slack helps identify knowledge gaps by surfacing frequently discussed topics in specific Slack channels. This feature makes it easy to capture conversations and convert them into searchable, trusted knowledge in Guru.
Access Required
Trending Topics is available to admins, Collection owners, and authors on All-in-one and Enterprise Guru plans.
Enabling Trending Topics digests in Slack
- Go to the Home tab of the Guru app in Slack.
- Under Trending Topics, click Subscribe to Trending Topics.
- Select up to 5 Slack channels to analyze.
Important
Be sure to invite the Guru app to each channel using
/invite @Guru
. - Add any Excluded Keywords to filter out irrelevant or repetitive terms.
- Choose the delivery cadence: weekly, every 2 weeks, or every 4 weeks. Set your preferred day and time.
- Click Save. Guru will confirm your subscription and provide the first digest delivery date via DM.
Note
To detect trends, Guru stores messages in the selected Slack channels for 90 days.
Taking action on Trending Topics
Use the Trending Topics digest to identify gaps and easily create or update content in Guru.
Click the ellipsis (⋯) next to a topic to open the action menu.
View messages and create or update a Guru Card
- Click View messages to review up to 7 Slack threads related to the topic.
- Click Create Card to draft a new Guru Card using the Slack content.
- You can edit the message content before publishing.
- On All-in-one and Enterprise plans, use ⚡️ Assist to summarize or format the content as an FAQ.
- Click Update Existing Card to search for and add content to an existing Card.
Share with a teammate
- Click Share with teammate to send the topic and related Slack messages to another user or public Slack channel.
- Guru will confirm the share with you and send the topic as a direct message to the recipient.
Exclude from future digests
- Select Exclude from future digests to prevent specific keywords or topics from appearing again.
Refresh topics
- Click Refresh Topics to generate a new set of trending insights on demand.
Managing your Trending Topics digests
To manage your subscription:
- Go to the Home tab of the Guru app in Slack.
- Click ✏️ Manage subscription settings under Trending Topics.
You can:
- Add or remove Slack channels (up to 5)
- Update excluded keywords
- Edit the digest delivery schedule
- Delete the digest altogether
- Click 🔄 Send new digest to request updated insights at any time
You can also manage these settings directly from the Trending Topics messages in Slack.
Disabling Trending Topics for your workspace
Admins can turn off Trending Topics for the entire workspace.
- Go to Manage > Apps & Integrations
- Click Manage next to the Slack app under Connected Apps.
- Toggle Trending Topics subscriptions off.
- Click Disable to confirm.
Important
Disabling this feature will permanently delete all active subscriptions across the workspace. This action cannot be undone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are new permissions required to use Trending Topics?
No. Permissions are included with the existing Slackbot installation. However:
- You must invite the Guru app to each channel.
- You must create a digest to begin collecting messages.
Can anyone use this feature?
Trending Topics is opt-in. Only admins, authors, or Collection owners who subscribe to the feature can use it. Admins can also choose to disable it workspace-wide.
What makes something “trending”?
Trending Topics uses both frequency and machine learning to identify topical phrases. Common but uninformative words like “customer” or “question” are automatically excluded.
