Follow an Author (similar to Follow a Card) gives readers the opportunity to get notifications about the work of Authors they care about. This allows them to stay informed about what’s happening on their team and company while also easing the burden Authors may feel to remember to share all of their work.

To follow an Author

1. Navigate to a Card that the Author you'd like to follow last edited and click on their name in the top left corner of the Card.

2. This will bring you to their user profile. Here you can view recent Cards that this Author has created. You also have visibility into who follows them and who they follow.

3. On the right side of the page, next to the user’s Avatar, select Follow.

✍️ Note

You can also access user profiles directly via a shared link.

Notifications from followed Authors

You will receive a notification when the Author that you follow publishes a new Card that you have access to.

Users will get notified based on preferred notification settings.

✍️ Note

Following an Author is different from following a Card where you will be notified of any significant update made to that Card. You will only be alerted when a new Card is published.

The follower will only get notifications for Cards that are published in Collections that they have access to.

What happens when an Author publishes a restricted card?

Notifications won’t be sent to an Author’s followers for restricted cards unless the follower is given access to the restricted card in the card’s settings.

What happens if someone loses their Author permission in the Guru team?

If a user had Author access in Guru, had followers, then lost their Author access, they will still have a user profile in Guru, but will no longer have a list of followers or a Follow button on their profile page.

Will a follower receive notifications when an Author updates a Card that has already been published?

💡 Tip

We recommend following Authors and then using those notifications to highlight the most important Cards written by these Authors so you can follow and keep up with changes.

What's the difference between following an Author and following a Card?

Follow an Author is best utilized when there is a user on your team who regularly creates content that is valuable to your work. By following the author, you can ensure you are up to date on new and necessary content within Guru, without these authors needing to notify you.

Follow a Card, on the other hand, is best used specifically for Cards that have information that is subject to frequent updates. Following the Card allows you to be in the know immediately when updates are made. While following an Author allows you to receive notifications when new Cards are created by that Author, you would not receive an update when an existing Card is updated by said user. Following a Card bridges that gap by making sure you are notified when meaningful updates are made to a Card.

Is there a way for Authors to bypass sending a notification to their followers?

There is no way for an Author to bypass their followers receiving a notification for each Card that they author. The only reason a notification will not be sent to a follower is if the follower doesn’t have permission to see the new Card.
