What is changing with Guru's App for Slack?
Our team is actively improving Guru's App for Slack in order to support:
Improved handling of link unfurls to give a preview of Card contents in Slack (see image below)
Ability to remove and delete Card previews
Many more improvements to come!
The App is asking for new permissions in order to create the updated link unfurl experience. The reinstall will be asking for two new permissions called links:read and links:write by Slack.
Here is Slack's documentation on the links:read permission. The links:read permission means that Guru will be able to read the Guru link contained in the Slack message (not the rest of the Slack message in which the link is included).
Here is Slack’s documentation on the links:write permission. The links:write permission means that Guru will be able to display (“write”) the visually engaging link preview for links to Guru cards.
Please keep in mind that Guru's Slack App is subject to the same security standards as the rest of our platform, so you can be assured that your data is safe. Click here to read more about Guru’s security standards.
In order to see these improvements, a Guru Admin on your team must reinstall Guru's App for Slack following the steps below. Only one of your Admins must complete this, individual users will not need to take any action.
Your existing preferences for the Guru Slack App will still be active after the reinstall. That means your team members’ notification settings will be the same, and the Guru bot will still be active in channels to which it has been invited.
If you fail to complete this reinstallation, your Guru team will not experience the new capability of link unfurls.
You will also lose out on any future improvements to Guru's Slack App and potentially experience buggy behavior, as our product development team will not be updating our old Slack App.
Reinstalling the new Slack integration
In the Guru web app (app.getguru.com), select Team Settings from the left navigation.
Click on Apps & Integrations.
Navigate to the the Apps tab. If you are not signed in to your Slack workspace, you will be prompted to enter your workspace name and sign in.
Under the Slack app, select Manage and then Add another Workspace. You'll see a pop-up appear, as shown in the example below.
Make sure the workspace selected in the upper righthand corner of the popup is the correct workspace you would like to reinstall the App in. From here, select Allow.
Once you select Allow, you should see the pop-up page indicating that the Guru integration to Slack is active.
You can close the pop-up screen and navigate back to Slack to see the most updated version of Slack.
In some instances, your company's Slack Admin or IT team may need to approve of the re-installment of Slack. Slackbot will notify you when your request is reviewed.
